Jausiers, where the hotel is located, is in the very heart of the Ubaye Valley. It is situated at an altitude of 1225 meters, at the foot of the Col de Restefond La Bonnette and 7 kilometres from Barcelonnette. The Ubaye Valley is in the Department of Alpes de Haute Provence, the prefecture of which is Digne Les Bains.
The valley is bounded to the north by the Hautes Alpes, on the East by the border with Italy and the south with the department of Alpes Maritime. Little known despite belonging to the Department of Alpes de Haute Provence, the Ubaye Valley is a valley of truly Alpine character.
It is truly a high mountain valley. The villages in the valley are situated between 900 and 1,800 meters. The valley is endowed with a Mediterranean climate and enjoys exceptional sunshine all year round and good snow cover for five months of the year. Barcelonnette, capital of the Ubaye, is one of the department's three sub-prefectures.
The Ubaye River runs through the entire valley. Its name is of Celtic and Iberian origin. It rises in the Longet Pass on the Italian border and flows into Lac du Serre-Ponçon, a distance of about 75 kilometres, making it one of the biggest valleys in the whole of the Alps.
A preserved natural area
There is no industry in the area. It has retained its traditional character. In winter people come from far and wide to enjoy downhill and Nordic skiing and snowshoeing, a sport that is booming with the development of new materials. In summer there is hiking, cycling, white water sports, climbing, paragliding and other leisure activities. The valley is also a paradise for bikers in search of mountain passes to discover. A must between Provence and Piedmont, it has a rich history which include the fortifications of the Maginot Line.
Many visitors to the Ubaye fall in love with its unspoiled nature and variety of landscapes: from Lac de Serre-Ponçon to the peaks of the Haute Ubaye. Les Aiguilles de Chambeyron, at 3412 metres, is the highest peak in the department and there are many others over 3,000 metres. Part of the Mercantour National Park - a paradise of unspoilt natural beauty - is located in the Ubaye.
